Via photography, video, graphics, or whatever area I venture into, this is the space where I provide a daily update of what I am working on creatively. In any case, it’s a combination of learning and expression that drives me along with my interests.

Gotta start somewhere

So in the past week I have jumped head first into the program called Illustrator by Adobe.  This program is for making Vector art and Vector Graphics.  These can sometimes be called Illustrations. All of the art created is based upon mathematical calculation so that the art can be scaled up or down without seeing any damage. So one of the things I tried making today was the calculator on my desk.  It purposely should look almost cartoonish. The program reminds me a lot of Vectorworks which is a Drafting program for Designers, Engineers and Architects.  Basic concepts are similar but Illustrator only deals in 2d never 3d.

Learning the basics

I just got off a 10 day show and did not get to do any real updates so here is what I worked on today.  Its a simple photoshop creation that is actually pretty simple to do but doesn't look to shabby. What I try to do when I am home is improve my skills by working and doing different tutorials I find on the internet. This one is from Pixel Perfect.   The show is hosted by a guy named Bert Monroy who really does some amazing things with Photoshop. This took me only about 20 minutes to do and taught me some great techniques with photoshop that I can take away and use in other areas of my work.  Especially the creation of the smoke.

Up Close and Personal

Taking photographs as you can see is one of my main new hobbies. I find that it really allows you to view things and frame them in a way that is truly original each time. The photo that you see below was taken with a macro lens.  These things are great for getting truly close and detailed on a subject, even something small like this butterfly. The downside of course is that you begin to deal with a razor thin DOF ( depth of field). Here you can see that the butterflies head eyes and mouth are in perfect focus but his wings fall out of focus very quickly.  Now when I took this picture my lens of the camera was probably only about 3 inches away from him so I was very close that combined with the 60mm Micro lens that I was using make the DOF so thin.

Last Minute Hip Hop

I recently was chosen to help put together the video for the current Kid Cudi tour.  Although he has not released and album yet he is doing what some call a promo tour but unlike most artist that just take out the basics and try to make money he is forgoing all money and using the cash from the shows to actually take his show to the next level. We had no time to make custom content for this show so we had to pretty much make everything out of stock material. The 2nd city of the tour was in NYC so I went to take pictures of my work with Lighting Designer Jon Goldstein. My new secret for taking pictures of live shows like this is set your camera to manual.  Try to use a very fast lens and take a shit ton of pictures.  In the 8 song set I believe I took about 900 pictures. Here is one of my favorites that you can see is special because it caught the strobe light behind him which of course is only flashing for a 100th of a second.

Giving back!

So in my professional career I have luckily had a lot of success. I would attribute a large portion of that success to my senior partners at my design firm UVLD but the rest I would attribute to doing long hard gigs when I was younger and doing my own thing when I was a theatre student. Luckily this week I am able to repeat that same thing again and give back to my theatre roots in a pro bono way. For this show which is called "Lavaman" I am listed as the Projection Consultant I believe. I have helped them in any ways that they want but we are actually running the show off of a Macbook Pro laptop running Keynote. We are using keynote to run stills and videos created for the show and it has been perfect. Below is the trailer for the show done by Kalli Newman.  Come check it out at the Ohio Theatre July 15th thru 18th in Soho.
